Overall the trip down to Newhaven was easier than last time. May be I was fitter, or the North wind helped a bit too. I had my packed lunch in Cranleigh in the park area near the shops. It consisted of sandwiches, a banana and apple juice. It was sunny and pleasant at lunchtime. Mostly, the North wind was very cold. I found my route without problem this time, but it was only 4 miles shorter.PHOTOS: Starting Out from Saint James The Great, RuscombeI rode into Lewes for a “flapjack” and a pot of Camomile tea. The break did me good. I had to use a cycle way route out of the town, as cycles were not allowed in the tunnel. I arrived in Newhaven just before 6 pm. I booked in at the "Old Volunteer" guest house, where I had made a reservation. After a shower, I went to the “Ship Inn,” and the meal was adequate, but a bit rough and ready! There does not seem to be much to offer in the town; two takeaways and two pubs serving meals.
