The morning was wet again, but not too bad when I left. There was lightening and thunder and the town lost electricity for a while. No coffee for breakfast, but not a problem for me as I had hot water for my infusion. The squalls continued to roll through; some heavy and with strong gusts. I plodded on to Aulnay and arrived just before 11:30. I looked round the church, signed the visitors book and took photographs.PHOTOS:I had lunch at the “Restaurant Colombiers” in Aulnay. Met my new found friend from the “Hôtel Glycines” at Melle. He had just come out of the tourist office. He seemed surprised that I had caught him up (so was I!). I think he travelled on minor roads, whereas I had travelled direct.
The journey to St. Jean-d’Angely was much the same, dodging the showers. Turned off through Courcelles instead of the main road. Eventually I found the Centre de Culture Européenne and got a warm welcome, a stamp for my Pilgrim’s Record, and a nice en suite room with a choice of three beds! I was able to put my bike in the passage near the rear entrance. This entrance had a door with an electronic combination lock. I was given the code to tap in, so I was able to come and go as I pleased. I repaired my spoke in the passage by the door.
After a shower and a change of clothes, I went to the “Le Bistro Gourmand,” just across the road for an excellent dinner.
