I had breakfast at an hotel bar in the morning and got away about 9 am, a late start. I visited the church in Fenioux. It is a small church with only one aisle, but has a 12c Lanterne des Morts in the cemetery opposite. When I came out of the church it was looking like rain again so I put on my over-trousers. Later, feeling too hot I took them off again. On arrival in Saintes I discovered that I had left my map-holder on the ground where I took my over-trousers off!

I decided to have lunch first, then sort myself out. I had lunch at a restaurant near the river, “Sarl Hotel Gril.” I found the Office de Tourisme and obtained a map of the city and directions to a Maison de Papetière and Go Sport to get a new map and holder. Got the holder first, having found it amongst the walkers’ gear.

I then looked round St. Euverte and bought some cards. I went back to the Office de Tourisme and told Madame of my success and also got a stamp for my Pilgrim’s Record. I then went to the Papetière for the map and a roll of passe-partout. I needed this to attach some elastic to the bottom like my old map holder.

Eventually I found the Abbaye des Dames, but there was a flight of steps to get in and there was no way I would get my bike up them. I did not wish to leave the bike in the car park.

I set out with the intention of making it to Berneuil or St. Leger, but because of a lack of signage it took longer and I finished up at Berneuil and a very pleasant one star Hotel-Bar-Restaurant - “La Goule Beunaise.” In my room I had a shower and wash basin, but the WC was on the landing. i had dinner in the Hotel restaurant.
