I was up before my alarm went off. I followed the flechas amarillas out of Pamplona to Cizor Menor then onto the N111. I visited the Romanesque octagonal church at Eunate and walked through Puente la Reina down the Calle Mayor and over the pilgrims’ bridge. A Spanish gentleman kindly gave me a brochure about the church at Eunate.PHOTOS:I tried following the old N111, but it petered out into a walkers’ track, so I rejoined the N111. I had to do quite a bit of pushing. I think that was partly because I did not sleep very well in Pamplona. It was the noise of the traffic and despite the fact that I used my ear plugs!
I turned off in to Estella and explored the old streets. I bought a new shower gel, two apples, a tin of tuna and a jar of mayonnaise. I had lunch at “La Cepa.” I met a couple of English people who were staying in Estella. They were on a very extended holiday on a tandem with a trailer! I said, “I bet the Spanish have not seen anything like that!” He said, “Heads definitely turn!” I had a long chat with them. It turned out that they live in Mevagissey, so we had something to talk about as my parents used to live nearby. It resulted in a very long lunch.
I only made it as far as Los Arcos. It was just going up to 6 pm and the refuge was full. They showed me a private refuge, “Albergue Casa Alberdi,” and I settled in there. The Señora seemed very pleasant, but we were limited in conversation by language. I met Juan, who is cycling the camino on the walkers’ route. We conversed in a mix of Spanish and English.
I did not eat dinner, because I was too full after lunch. I just had my apple and some Carob “chocolate.”
