Burgos to Carrion de los Condes

DISTANCE: 96.8 k/60.1 mi; TIME: 5h 13m; AV: 18.5 kph/11.5 mph; ODO: 1740.5 k

The route out of Burgos was simple. I just had to keep awake and watch out for my turn on to the BU-P-4043 to Hornillos. After a bit, I stopped on a hill for a breakfast of bread and cheese. I passed through the Convent of St. Antón, literally; the road goes through the middle. I did not go into Castrojeriz, I just followed the road round the town. Going through the town would have meant walking the bike for at least 20 minutes.

I stopped in Fromista and tried to phone Jenny, but without success. I found that the church of St. Martin was open and looked round inside. It is a very simple Romanesque church in good condition and it is cited as one of the most perfect examples of Romanesque architecture in Spain. There are some fine carved capitals on the columns.

I set out for Carrion de los Condes, stopping at Villalcázar de Sirga to look at the church. A very different church to St. Martin’s. It has a magnificent carved portal and an elaborate alter screen.

I arrived in Carrion de los Condes just after 2 pm and had lunch at Hostal “La Corte.” I then found the refuge and checked in early; no problems with the bike. The route to Sahagún does not have much accommodation or restaurants, so it was better to stop here early. I did various chores then went out to look for dinner.

The problem is guessing, or finding out, which restaurant will open early for pilgrims, who usually have to be back in the refuge by 10 pm! Several pilgrims, mainly French or French Canadian, were doing the same thing. Eventually we found a place for dinner that opened at 8 pm. I was welcomed by the French party and I was encouraged to use my French. It was a very pleasant evening. Tried to phone Jenny again, but failed on all of the three phones I tried.
