Santiago 2006
The Plan

I had hoped to do this pilgrimage in 2004, a Holy Year, when St. James day fell on a Sunday. I had to cancel it because my wife, Jenny, got rheumatoid arthritis. I needed to stay and look after her. Due to the skill of her rheumatologist and the modern drugs now available, she is very much better. I am doing the pilgrimage as a thanksgiving for her improvement and it is also the reason why I sought sponsorship or donations for arc - Arthritis Research Campaign (Registered Charity Number - 207711).

I replanned to make the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela on foot, in the summer of 2006. My pilgrimage was to take me about 47 days. I planned to walk to Plymouth and go via Newton Abbot, Rattery, Cleeve (Ivybridge), and finally Plymouth. The big effort then was to walk to Santiago via San Vicente, Ribadesella, Gijon, Ribadeo, Arzua and finally Santiago.

I was to return via the FEVE railway to Santander and the ferry home via Plymouth. The distance, not including the ferries and trains, would be about 400 miles.

My sponsors and I raised £250 with their generous donations.

A big thank you to all of them.

Best regards,   Shane.
